I’m A Speed Demon –New Fastest Mile 5:35

OK so I’m not really a speed demon but I had an amazing run today where I ran 5.5 miles and finished in a time of 38:35. (I ran 5 miles in 34: something but that included the warm up as well) however this run was very fast and I actually ran a mile in 5:35. Although it was flat and then downhill and then flat again, I was amazed to look down at my Garmin it showed 1 mile and it showed the time for my lap at 5:35.

Garmin went crazy and when I logged my stats into the computer it actually said I ran 6:19 so not sure what went on there. Do any of you guys own a Garmin 305 and does it play tricks like this? (I think it maybe because I was pressing the auto lap button and I’m not used to it)

So my run for today went a little like this;

I was due to run 5.5 miles and I ran the 1st mile to warm up and ran it in a comfortable pace of 8:04. However during my warm up I felt my knee slightly ache as in previous weeks (runner’s knee) but once I ran up the 1st hill it went away and when I was running fast there were zero pain.

After the 1st mile I decided to run around the forest which is a big square area and it has a steep uphill and then it’s practically flat and a nice downhill that bends a little. It’s a tough area to run round but it was very fun and fast today.

After my warm up I ran up the steep hill and then decided to rest for 30 seconds and then try and run all the way back to the start which goes flat, downhill, flat and then back uphill. It’s about 2 miles long.

I ran the 1st mile very quick but forgot to press the Garmin 305 lap button to start the mile; I think this is the reason why my stats could be off from what I read at the time. I know I ran fast miles than what it says below as once I finished a mile I slowed down as it was the uphill section.

Here are my mile splits and also some charts of my run.

1. 8:03 warm up mile
2. 6:37
3. 6:46
4. 6:38
5. 6:19
6. 4:07 half a mile slow back home

I will be doing this run probably once a week and will make sure I keep an eye out more on my stats and I will also try and run the route the other way as the downhill I ran today is much tougher going up it so it will be interesting to see my stats doing it that way.

Eventually I may try and run round the whole route 3 times and that should give me a 10k time that’s quite quick but also has uphill and downhill sections. This will also build up my leg strength and help to make me a much faster runner.

But I’m amazed that I ran 5:35 per mile although it was downhill and flat I’m still very happy.
