Physio Say’s I Don’t Have The Most Efficient Running Form

So it’s been a while since I last posted and the last you read was I was having problems with my Achilles heel. After my last run the 8.5 mile canal run I rested for over a week and then ran a slow 3 mile around 9 mins per mile. I could feel a slight twinge in my Achilles and then next day it was sore again.

I then decided enough is enough and that I should pay a visit to the physio to get me running again, and get a proper assessment of my Achilles injury. I told the physio all about my running and past injuries and she assessed my legs and basically told me I don’t have the best running form and that “your calves are the tightest I’ve ever seen”  I knew I wasn’t the most flexible person ever, but I didn’t think I was that bad as I can touch my toes.

I also asked her if I’m ok to run the Robin Hood marathon in less than 6 weeks and she says “well if it’s something you want to do, then I suppose you will have to manage the pain”.

She suggested getting a heel lift to put in my trainers and to see how that goes and also do lots of calve stretching and to strengthen my calves by doing heel raises on steps and then lowering my foot further than the step itself.

So I left the physio feeling a little bad being told my form isn’t great and I’m out of alignment but I got some exercises to fix the problems so hey this time next year I will hopefully be injury free and loving my running more than ever.

2 days later after doing the exercises and lots of stretching, I got myself a heel lift to put in my running trainers and I ran 5 miles and averaged 8:04 per mile. I felt very sluggish running as it was humid outside but this may also be that I’ve lost my fitness or the fact I had a curry the night before.

Running the 5 miles was fine on my Achilles and I felt no pain. After the run I also did some stretches and the next day I was also pain free. No aches, no pain. So hopefully the exercises and heel lift have helped. I have a 3 mile run Wednesday and then 8.5 miles Thursday so I will report how my Achilles is.

As for the meantime I’m also sticking to just 1 pair of running trainers to see if that helps my Achilles which also means that I’m putting away my Vibrams until after the marathon.
